💡 Tips
  • Gutter = inside margin only, not outside.
  • Always use KDP minimum or larger — never smaller.
  • Mirror margins in Word/InDesign for correct gutter.
  • Long books (600+ pages) need 1.0″ minimum gutter.
  • Gutter applies to paperback only — not eBooks.

What Is the KDP Gutter Margin?

The gutter is the extra space added to the inside edge of each page — the side closest to the spine. When a paperback is bound, the pages curve inward toward the binding. Without enough gutter, the text near the spine gets swallowed into the fold and becomes difficult or impossible to read. Amazon KDP specifies exact minimum gutter requirements based on your total page count.

This is one of the most common reasons first-time self-publishers get their manuscripts rejected or receive poor-looking physical books. The required gutter is not the same as your outside, top, or bottom margins — it applies only to the inside edge of each page and must be mirrored correctly in your word processor or design software.

How to Set Gutter in Microsoft Word

In Microsoft Word, gutter margin is set in the Page Setup dialog. Go to Layout → Margins → Custom Margins. In the Margins tab, find the “Gutter” field and enter your required gutter value. Set the “Gutter position” to Left. Make sure “Mirror margins” is selected so the gutter automatically alternates between left and right pages. This is essential for a properly bound book — without mirrored margins, the gutter only appears on one side.

How to Set Gutter in Adobe InDesign

In InDesign, create a new document with “Facing Pages” checked. Set your inside margin to your required gutter value. The inside margin applies to the right side of left-hand pages and the left side of right-hand pages — which is exactly what you need for a bound book. Make sure your document dimensions match your KDP trim size exactly before setting up margins.

FAQ

KDP Gutter Margin — FAQs

Common questions about inside margins and gutter requirements for Amazon KDP paperbacks.

The gutter is the extra inside margin near the book spine. It prevents text from disappearing into the binding when a book is held open. Amazon KDP requires: 0.375 inches for books under 150 pages, 0.75 inches for 151–400 pages, 0.875 inches for 401–600 pages, and 1.0 inch for 600+ pages.
Yes — gutter and inside margin refer to the same thing in KDP formatting. It is the margin on the side of the page closest to the spine. Your outside margin (away from the spine), top margin, and bottom margin are separate values. KDP requires a minimum of 0.5 inches for outside, top, and bottom margins.
More pages means a thicker, stiffer spine. A thicker spine causes the pages to curve more sharply near the binding when held open. More curvature means more text is hidden in the fold, so a larger gutter is needed to keep text readable. A 600-page novel needs nearly three times the gutter of a 100-page book.
Go to Layout → Margins → Custom Margins. In the Margins dialog, find the Gutter field and enter your value. Set Gutter position to Left. Enable Mirror Margins so the gutter alternates correctly between left and right pages. This ensures the inside margin is always on the binding side, regardless of whether a page is odd or even.
