Is KDP Available in India?
Yes, Amazon KDP is fully available to Indian authors. You can publish both Kindle eBooks and KDP paperbacks from India. Your books can be sold on Amazon.in (India), Amazon.com (US), Amazon.co.uk (UK), and all other Amazon marketplaces worldwide.
KDP does not currently have a print-on-demand printing facility in India. Paperback books sold on Amazon.in are printed at Amazon’s facilities in the US or UK and shipped to Indian customers. This means paperback delivery times to Indian customers are longer (typically 2–4 weeks), and the print cost plus international shipping makes Indian paperback prices higher than in the US market.
For Kindle eBooks, none of this matters — eBooks are delivered instantly worldwide and the location of the author or buyer has no impact on delivery.
KDP India Royalty Rates in INR
KDP India operates on the same royalty structure as global KDP, but prices and royalties in the Amazon.in marketplace are denominated in INR.
| Format | Royalty Rate | Price Range for Higher Rate | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle eBook (70%) | 70% of list price | Rs 99 – Rs 699 | Rs 299 × 70% = Rs 209.30/sale |
| Kindle eBook (35%) | 35% of list price | Below Rs 99 or above Rs 699 | Rs 99 × 35% = Rs 34.65/sale |
| Paperback (60%) | 60% minus print cost | All prices | (Rs 599 × 60%) − print cost |
Royalties earned in INR are converted to USD (or your local currency) at Amazon’s exchange rate and paid to your bank account. The conversion happens at the time of payment, not at the time of sale.

Calculate India Royalties →ISBN for Indian Authors
The ISBN situation for Indian KDP authors is the same as for global KDP publishers. You can use a free KDP-assigned ISBN for your books, which is sufficient for publishing exclusively on Amazon. This ISBN lists Amazon as the publisher of record.
If you want to publish your book in India through non-Amazon channels — Indian bookstores, school libraries, or other distributors — you need an ISBN issued by the Indian ISBN Agency (Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN), which is operated by the National Book Trust under the Ministry of Education. Indian ISBNs are available to Indian publishers and authors through this government agency.
For most Indian KDP authors focused on Amazon sales, the free KDP ISBN is perfectly adequate and saves both the cost and bureaucratic process of obtaining an Indian-issued ISBN.
Publishing Timeline in India
The publishing timeline on KDP is the same regardless of where you are located as an author. After uploading your manuscript and cover, KDP typically reviews and approves your book within 24–72 hours for new titles. Once approved, your book goes live on all Amazon marketplaces simultaneously.
For paperback books sold in India specifically, the shipping timeline from Amazon’s printing facility to Indian customers is typically 2–4 weeks, which is longer than the 1–5 day delivery Indian Amazon customers are accustomed to for regular products. This is worth mentioning in your book description or product page — some customers may not realize the shipping timeline before purchasing.
Payment Methods for Indian Authors
Indian KDP authors can receive royalty payments via direct bank transfer (EFT) to an Indian bank account. The minimum threshold for EFT payment is $100 USD (approximately Rs 8,000–8,500 at current exchange rates). Royalties accumulate in your KDP account until you reach this threshold.
To set up EFT payment, go to your KDP account → Account information → Getting paid. Enter your Indian bank account details including IFSC code, account number, and bank name. KDP makes payments approximately 60 days after the end of the calendar month in which sales occurred.
Wire transfer is also available with a higher minimum threshold of $100, but EFT is generally faster and cheaper for Indian bank accounts.
Selling in India vs Global — Which Marketplace to Focus On
Most successful Indian KDP authors focus primarily on the US market (Amazon.com) rather than the Indian market (Amazon.in). Here’s why: the US Kindle market is significantly larger, US readers pay higher prices for eBooks (typically $2.99–$9.99 USD versus Rs 99–299 on Amazon.in), and competition for English-language books is similar.
That said, the Indian market has specific advantages for certain types of content. Books written in Indian languages, books about Indian topics, and books targeting Indian readers specifically can find engaged audiences on Amazon.in that they wouldn’t reach through the US marketplace. If your book is about Indian history, Indian culture, or written in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, or another Indian language, the Amazon.in marketplace deserves primary focus.
Tips for Indian KDP Authors
Price your Kindle eBook at Rs 299 or higher to access the 70% royalty rate. At Rs 99 (the minimum for 70%), you earn only Rs 69.30. At Rs 299, you earn Rs 209.30 — three times more. Price your eBook appropriately for the value it provides rather than trying to undercut the market.
Publish in English first if you want to access the global KDP market. An English-language book is available to Kindle readers worldwide and can earn from multiple Amazon marketplaces simultaneously. A Hindi-language book earns only from Indian and Hindi-speaking readers.
Use KDP Select if you’re starting out with English fiction or genre non-fiction. Kindle Unlimited subscribers in India and globally can read your book and generate per-page royalties that add to your direct purchase income. KDP Select requires 90-day exclusivity but can significantly boost visibility for new authors.
